What Micro-Ceramic Surfaces Are

Micro-ceramic, also referred to as cracked gesso, is a handcrafted surface built on the tension between two kinds of form. On one side is the technical, angular geometry of the composition: deliberate shapes, blocks and lines that give the panel its structure. On the other side is the fluid, organic pattern of natural gesso cracks, which develops as the material cures and cannot be drawn in advance. The surface works because the two are balanced rather than competing — the geometry gives the eye something to hold on to, and the cracking keeps the panel from reading as flat or mechanical.

Because the crack pattern forms during curing, each panel is individual. This is a property of the material rather than a flaw, and it is what gives a run of micro-ceramic panels their depth when they are installed together.

Design Options

Design work focuses on the geometry and the palette. The scale of the geometric composition, the direction of the lines and the contrast between the crack pattern and the ground colour are all variables that can be set for a project. Every project starts with artwork or a design reference. We work with Photoshop, Illustrator, .JPG, .TIFF and most image formats to develop the composition, then produce bespoke samples so the geometry, colour and crack scale can be signed off. Once approved, the panels are manufactured with a range of surface textures and effects, engineered for how they will be fixed and lit, and delivered with fabrication, forming, lighting, hardware and installation support.
